"Traime la Chancleta!!!" Old or New School Discipline for Latina Families? What works?

December 28, 2006 by editor  (View Source

In the Latino world, "Traime la Chancleta" is as common as "Bendicion, Mami." This editor knows both very well. The dreaded chancleta was usually an ugly, oversized, plastic slipper your Abuela or Titi sported with her floral print, short sleeve, pastel, cotton, knee-length robe. Should old school discipline be replaced with the mainstream practice of Time Out? Tell us what you think?

I believe that old school discipline should never be replaced. Old school discipline should be used in its perspective time. Due to BCW you can't beat the crap out of a child like in the past, but you still can't spare the rod and spoil the child. I believe that old school and new school discipline should be used, either separately or collectively, depending on the situation.
