Indictment of Bonds changes few minds among fans

(sfchron) The true believers still believed. The skeptics were still skeptical. It takes more than a federal indictment to shake a Barry Bonds fan. "I don't think it's an important issue for a federal court to bother with," said Kim Deasy, sitting at the bar at MoMo's restaurant, across King Street from the Giants ballpark, only moments after baseball's career home-run leader was indicted Thursday on perjury and obstruction of justice charges. "He brought me a lot of fun times over there," Deasy said, pointing across the street at the brick edifice. "So I say let it drop. Let him live his life in peace." Fans seemed just as resigned to the indictment as they were to the Giants' losing season. Both had been in the works for a while, and neither came as much of a surprise. "I'm disappointed for Barry Bonds, and I'm disappointed for baseball," said Michael Williams of San Francisco, who paused to glance at the statue of Willie Mays in front of the ballpark. "Athletes do things to chemically enhance their bodies that are detrimental to their health. It's a shame from a role-model perspective. But it's common knowledge that it's happening." Asked what should happen to Bonds' career homer mark, Williams said, "I would be comfortable putting an asterisk in the record book." It's not easy being a baseball fan in mid-November. The ballpark is shuttered, the ticket windows are dark, and the field is being groomed for such things as rock concerts and ski jump contests. The chalk lines are covered up, and a fan can't tell fair from foul without a federal writ. "If he did it, then he needs to be indicted so we can find out," said Cathy Johnson of Oakland, standing in front of the Juan Marichal statue outside the gates near the Lefty O'Doul Bridge.
