Why is "Flavor of Love" with Flavor Flav so popular with viewers?

October 05, 2006 by editor

“Flavor of Love” with Flavor Flav is one of the more popular reality shows on television. What is it about Flavor Flav and the show that attracts so much attention? What do you like or dislike about the show?

I like that the show is real....Flavor Flav is not a Denzal...or Blair Underwood...He's not smooth, the way he dresses, looks like he stood in front of a broken paint ball gun, he looks like a modern day Buck-Wheat...and the Women on the show go crazy over him...It's just the hype of being on TV. On an average day, you can see the Flavor Flav type on Bankhead HWY trying to sell you book-leg DVD's...I don't take the show serious...I watch it becaues...It's interesting to see what Afircan American women would do just to get a man...and I think white peolpe laugh because they see us fighting over a man like dogs fighting over a bone... And his image...put's a wrong idea in America's mind on being a black man with a little bit of money and fame... and the type of women on the show...total discredits us...What happen to our spirit of pride and excellence.... I watch the Flavor of Love show because it has a familiarity about it. He and the women remind me of my old neighborhood, family members and friends of the family. My childhood. I am one for rooting for the underdog. Maybe it is some outward sign of an inward desire to root for myself as an African American male. Maybe becuase I have been a victim of weak relationships. Maybe it is because I have seen and experience abuse so I look for hope on the lowest levels. I like looking at peoples behaviour. I have always been a people watcher. I can sit in a park or crowded room and entertain myself with watching peoples actions and interactions. Through all the theatrics, there are some good basic projections being planted. For instance, you should base love on more than the physical and beauty, if you watch closely the show has done that to a small extent. Also, you should date alot to help you weed out and understand what you are looking for. Furthermore, no matter how much you try you can still be deceived because ultimately you can not see what is in a man's heart and mind, you see only what they want you to see. Lastly, you have to undertand how the person you choose fits in your circle of family and friends. The one thing that is important to me that is not projected is the need for the Creator. There is a need for the Creator to help you discern the affairs of the heart, to help guard you from the arrows of life. When dealing with love on all levels, what better place to learn and understand than from the Creator, who is LOVE. Flav like a lot of our entertainers are selfish and are not using their infrequent opportunities as African Americans to project positive imagery. Once you sign for a second season on a reality show what better opportunity is there. Maybe he and others like him don't know or aren't trying to know the Creator. African American entertainers on a whole have very little reoccurring opportunities anyway. So if you think you have to keep projecting negativity to stay current then ultimately you have sold your soul and sold us out.

The show is pure tomfoolery, new day coonage. Like any "reality" show it thrives on mutual explotiation -- the channels get to produce low cost entertainment, second-tier celebrities get to roll the dice on more time for that big win, hopefuls get an opportunity for their "big break," viewers get to say that, no, no matter how bad things are for me, I have more self-respect than the idiots on that show. Even understanding this, I'm heartbroken by the representations of Black women on the show. It's okay that they're golddiggers, it's okay that it's just showing how some women really are (or whatever the apologist stance is). But it's not okay that there are not balanced images of women of color on television. And especially not on VH1.
