Since September 29th when Fuerza Hispana launched their Get Out The Vote (GOTV) effort they have knocked on over 9,000 doors in Orange County and over 5,000 doors in Osceola County, Florida. I began working with the Osceola team ten days ago. Each day a team of roughly twenty people knocks on doors in the exurban communities of Kissimmee and Ponciana in an effort to make sure that Latino voters represent in the upcoming elections. In a crucial state like Florida early voting is will have a significant impact on which way Florida swings. And for Latinos and African Americans early voting will make all the difference in terms of getting our voices heard.
Remembering the debacle of the 2000 and 2004 elections where ballots were lost or went uncounted, voters are turning out en masse for this election by using the early vote which begins today, October 20th throughout the country. In Florida for example, voters in Miami/Dade County are waiting in line an average of 45 minutes to vote because there were malfunctions with the computerized voting machines. The lines are going to be even longer on November 4th. Also in Florida you must bring your ID to vote and if your name on the roll call doesn’t match what is on your Drivers’ License or ID then they may turn you away. It’s important to get to the polls to vote early to avoid these problems!
