Four years ago, on November 2nd, my 31st birthday, I sadly watched the returns come in. By 2:00 am it was clear who the winner was. We all woke up the next morning facing another four years of the Bush Administration
But going into this election on November 4, 2008, the energy in Florida is high. It’s been an incredible day, driving around Orlando and the suburbs, Obama supporters are out and representing, honking their horns and yelling, “Obama! Obama! Obama!” I hope that being part of a Latino get out the vote effort increases the Latino turnout for this election, I know that support for Obama among Latinos from Cubans-Puerto Ricans was high in Central Florida.
The last polls will officially close here by 8:00 pm and the results will start pouring in. Regardless of what happens Barack Obama has made history. This is a movement and it has increased the voter turn out of communities of color, in particular Black voters.
Unlike four years ago, I hope I go to bed witnessing a landslide victory for Barack Obama and the Democrats. I hope we take over the Senate, because what’s at stake is so great: the future of organized labor and our economy; health care; and immigration policy.
