A new report from the Pew Hispanic Center indicates that the highest percentage of two-adult households with children are among undocumented immigrants: A Portrait of Unauthorized Immigrants in the U.S.
The research, posted to the website on April 14th, suggests that the rates of undocumented families with families is more than twice the percentage of US-born parents. On the PewHispanic homepage, the bar graph tells a fascinating story of the percentages of two-parent homes with children:
47% of undocumented immigrants
35% of legal residents
21% of US-born
This affirms the issue of family unification/reunification squarely in the immigration debate. But, less discussed is:
... How does this change the nature of what the typical U.S. household is?
... What does this say about family values in 2009?
... Can it mean that parents without papers are much more prevalent in the lives of today's youth?
... Can it mean that to be undocumented is an American family value?
